METRO CLUB ACTION IN 2016

WELCOME to our newest members Chris, W9LIZ and Tony N9VVO.

Our annual Winterfest dinner was held on Friday, January 15 at Papa Joe’s in Orland Park. 25 members and guests enjoyed a great meal, door prizes and lots of fun.

Jerry WB9Z is on the team activating Palmyra(KH5) as K5P.

Mike K9AJ is on the team activating South Sandwich (VP8STI) and South Georgia (VP8SGI).

SPECIAL EVENT STATION February 2016: We operated a SPECIAL EVENT STATION commemorating the 1883 Diamond Mine Disaster on Saturday, February 6, 2016.

W9MU gave us a detailed presentation of the G5RV antenna at our March meeting.

Our annual picnic was held on Saturday, August 6 at the QTH of N9LAH in Chebanse. 28 members enjoyed the food and conversation.

K9AJ activated two rare IOTAs in August NA159 and NA196. Hope you were able to put him in your log!

We lost yet another great Metro DXer. Jack, W9NJB, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2016. Jack had served as our club secretary/treasurer for many years and will certainly be missed.

We operated SPECIAL EVENT W9C October 31, 2016 through November 6, 2016 commemorating the birth of an outstanding American – Walter Cronkite – “The Most Trusted Man in America”. Check our listing in November 2016 QST. Operations of W9C occurred on 80 through 10 meters (excluding 60 meters) on CW, SSB and RTTY at various times throughout the operation period.

Team Saint Martin (FS) comprised of Paul, K9NU, Jim, N9TK, John, W9ILY and John, K9EL completed their expedition to Saint Martin from November 30 through December 10, 2016 . They operated in the ARRL 160 meter contest, the TARA RTTY Melee, the 10-Meter RTTY contest and lots of general operating. They made over 10,000 QSOs and operated up to three stations simultaneously!

We had a great Field Day operation from Tinley Park with 918 contacts logged.

Metro and the NIDXA participated in a joint meeting in August.

We finished Field Day 2015 as #17 in the 1A category and had a lot of fun!

At the end of 2013, WB9Z had amassed as whopping 3,005 band-countries with the latest being XZ1J on 12 and 10 and S21ZBC on 12 and 10. Amazing!

Jerry, WB9Z, was on the DX trail again and was part of the Amsterdam Island team – FT5ZM. Val, NV9L, was their Chief Pilot. CLICK HERE!

We lost several of our long time members during the year. Patti Colvin, AF9H, passed on March 9 in Kingman, AZ. On June 10 we lost Bob Truhlar, W9LNQ. Then, on July 16, Frank, K9BWQ, passed away. On October 15 we lost another member, Jerry KE9I. We will miss all of these great friends!

Our annual Winterfest was held on  January 18 and with 17 attendees enjoying the dinner.

A nice donation has been made on behalf of our club to INDEXA. Jerry, WB9Z, is one of the Directors of INDEXA.

The Seventh annual picnic was held at N9LAH’s QTH with 29 members and guests had a great time.

Jerry, WB9Z and Jim, N9TK were members of the Wake Island (K9W) team. Val, NV9L, was a Pilot station for the DXpedition.

Donations were made to N9A and FT5ZM.

METRO CLUB ACTION IN 2012

Our annual Winterfest was postponed due to a snow storm in January. Rather than have a rescheduled dinner in February, it was decided to have a Pizza Party at our new meeting location in Tinley Park. The party was a great success.

Our 2010 Winterfest Dinner was enjoyed by all.

METRO was present in the flea market area at the Dayton Hamvention and our banner was flying! Bob, N9ORD and Phil, N9LAH were our Club representatives.

WB9Z SETS CONTEST RECORDS

Jerry, WB9Z, claimed a very impressive 2,144 Qs forCQWW-SSB 20 Meter high power for the TOP Claimed 20M score in the USA and #3 in the World! ALSO, in the CQWW-160M contest from 2009, Jerry was #1 SSB high power in the USA and set a new SSB USA single op record. Great going, Jerry!!

SPECIAL EVENT STATION – W9M

Our Special Event Station W9M operated on Saturday, October 3 celebrating our club’s 30TH ANNIVERSARY.

SA-062 Rare IOTA Operation

Mike, K9AJ, operated with a group from Brazil as PW6C from rare IOTA SA-062 in November. The team made 7,500 QSOs and Mike is the QSL manager.

W9TY finished Field Day with 4,264 points with 780 Q’s on CW and 297 on SSB (Third place in Illinois in Class 1A). Check out Dennis KA9ZZT’s great pictures on Dennis’ own Shutterfly page HERE.

Our annual picnic was held on Saturday, August 15 and all had a fun time.

Mike, K9AJ, with KD6WW, operated as K9AJ/VY0 and KD6WW/VY0 from NA-185 (a rare IOTA) from Friday, July 31 through Monday, August 3 and made over 4,000 QSOs. Click HERE for Mike’s story and unusual picture.     

Jess, AI9L, completed his 20 Meter Worked All States RTTY in July, all confirmed by LoTW! Nice going, Jess! He worked W9ILY/Ø in Nebraska during the NAQP-RTTY contest for #50.
